ANTIBIOTICS

Abstract
Antimicrobial agents are used in the treatment of specific bacterial, mycotic, rickettsial, or viral¢¥ infections where the drugs can be expected to be active against the infecting organism and the course of the disease can be excepted to be altered favorably.
In this paper antibiotics only in bacterial infections are reviewed. The principles of antibiotic sensitivity testing are briefly mentioned. However, in most instances, empiric therapy based on a reasoned assumption of the etiologic agent. may be begun without sensitivity tests. In severe infections treatment should be begun and later altered if so indicated by sensitivity tests.
The choice of antimicrobial agents for the treatment of bacterial infections are also mentioned.
